People who experience them report different occurences, but often experience bliss, a light at the end of the tunnel and flashbacks to key moments in their life. They may also have an out of body sensation and can usually view themselves from afar. Most cannot easily tell how much time is passing, and claim to have spoken with deceased friends and family after returning to their body.
A BBC article on the matter showed that 7 of 63 patients in similar life-threatening situations experienced an NDE, which is around 11% of the study group. At present there is still a healthy amount of skepticism about what is actually causing NDEs to occur. Some of their features can be explained by neurologists:
But there remain several aspects of the phenomena that cannot be accounted for with the above explanations. These include blind people being able to see themselves injured on the ground and patients explaining what happened during an operation in detail while they were unconcious or clinically dead.
Many who have had a near-death experience change their behaviour afterwards and a small percentage come away with enhanced psychic and improved healing skills. There are even cases where people have caused electrical equipment to malfunction when passing by. It is a staggering phenomena and massive challenge for scientists, religious scholars and the public to explain what is causing this.
